Late-Gothic church architecture

This late-Gothic church was built at a time when Aalsmeer was a small community with only 80 houses. The Roman Catholic Church initiated its construction, and the church stands on sturdy five-meter spruce poles. Its architecture is distinguished by the masonry of its pillars and capitals, revealing that it was built in sections. The church boasts thick outer walls, ranging from 40 to 60 centimeters, adorned with a natural stone framework and stained-glass windows. The design and construction bear resemblance to the Jacobskerk in The Hague, suggesting the same master builder may have been involved.

Dorpskerk Aalsmeer Restorations

Over the centuries, the Dorpskerk has undergone numerous restorations and modifications. One notable change was the relocation of the main entrance to Dorpsstraat in 1867. A significant restoration in 1977 completely revamped the church’s interior, completed the consistory at the back, and returned the main entrance to Kanaalstraat. The most recent large-scale restoration occurred in 2011, focusing on the exterior, where approximately nine kilometers of joints were replaced, and parts of the roof tiling were renewed.

The Dorpskerk is not only a physical space for worship but also extends its reach through technology. For years, it has maintained a video connection with the Aalsmeer Care Centre, enabling residents and volunteers to virtually attend the services on Sunday mornings.
