Flowers in Aalsmeer: the order of the day. If you want to learn about the floral history of our village, come and visit the old auction building at the Historical Garden.

Old auction building: buying on the clock

Every last Saturday of the month from April to October, you can buy flowers and plants ‘by auction’ here. In the former Aalsmeer ‘Bloemenlust’ auction, the ‘Jugendstil’ auction clock from the thirties strikes once more and it is such a pleasure to see. The auctioneers can organise special auction sessions for school classes and other groups. This old auction building is also an excellent setting for presentations and receptions.

Historical Garden Aalsmeer: a nursery full of horticultural history

It is of course no coincidence that the Historical Garden is in Aalsmeer. It was here that the seeds of floriculture were laid many years ago. The cultivation of fruit trees was the most important work in the 17th century for the local tree growers. They also grew strawberries in the ground beneath the trees. At the end of the 19th century, Aalsmeer growers switched to growing flowers outdoors. The next step was to grow flowers in greenhouses which quickly followed. Those centuries (until 1940) come to life again at the Historical Garden, containing around 13 sq kms of floral Aalsmeer history. The greenhouses where fragrant roses are still grown are worth a visit.
