Old Catholic Church Aalsmeer

A hidden gem in the flower village of Aalsmeer: The Old Catholic Church Aalsmeer. The name 'Old-Catholic' means that this Catholic church aligns itself with the early Christian church. It should be said that the church does not want to be 'unchanging and rigid' but is open to spiritual renewal and ecclesiastical life. The church is open to the world, the cultures and the questions that we face today. It is an impressive building on the Oosteinderweg!

The Old Catholic Church Aalsmeer is over 150 years old

The Old Catholic Church of Aalsmeer has a rich history that dates to 27 August 1861. On that day, the then bishop of Haarlem (Casparus Johannes Rinkel) ordained the newly built church. In 2011, the Old Catholic Church celebrated its 150th anniversary. For the Aalsmeer working group, this was a good reason to hold a festive weekend to celebrate the anniversary. Activities included an exhibition of the Aalsmeer artist Afke Borgman, a Eucharist celebration and a wonderful reception in the garden.

The only old catholic cemetery in the Netherlands

Unique to the church is the only old catholic cemetery in the Netherlands. Remarkably, this cemetery was established in 1855, six years before the church was even built. The cemetery contains the tombs of three Haarlem bishops.
